After two years of MIG welding exclusivity, I’m expanding to include oxyacetylene welding and starting by offering an introductory torch class. Oxyacetylene welding is ideal for versatility; the same torch can cut through ¼” steel plate, braze together a bicycle frame, hot bend a wrought iron gate, weld up a table, help you lose 50 pounds or more, and walk your dog. In this intro class, we’ll learn to harness this 6300* F beast and use it to cut, bend, and weld steel to make a decorative tea light holder of your design that you can take home and use to advertise your inner bad-ass. After completion of this class, you will be certified to use the torches during Open Shop hours.
You should be comfortable using power tools and not squeamish with loud noises, sparks, or fire. Participants must wear long sleeve cotton shirts and cotton pants/jeans without holes. Pants must cover the tops of your shoes. Please also wear leather or canvas shoes (zero nylon/synthetic materials on the shoes—vans, work boots, cowboy boots—all good). DIY Art Space Workshop or Whatever
Saturday, August 6th, 2011
1pm
An invitation from Mark Allen, the guy who started Machine Project:
“Hey you! Have you ever thought about starting your own
art/music/literary/performance/whatever space? Why not? Los Angeles is
a rich environment for creating low cost, grassroots venues of all
kinds. Based on my experience with starting Machine Project and a couple of
previous (even more low end) artist run spaces, I will answer
questions, give advice, and provide an overview on the basics of
starting your own cultural venue in this free informal workshop.
If this is something you are interested in attending, please email me
at m@machineproject.com with the subject line [want to be starting
something] and include whatever questions you have, so I can prepare
to be as useful as possible. Space will be limited to those who
register ahead of time, unless no one signs up, in which case I’ll
talk to whoever walks through the door.
best,
Mark”

Members $75.00
Non-Members $90.00
Millinery is the art of making hats by hand using wooden head blocks and simple hand-sewing techniques. In this 2 day class you will make your own, one-of-a-kind hat using natural woven straw material and an assortment of trim materials. Design techniques are based on the free-form blocking and draping techniques that were used during the 1920’s to the 1940’s when women were making their own hats to cut costs and introduced innovative styles into the world of fashion. You can make an original version of a classic design, or combine different hat shapes to invent your own free-form sculpted design. If you have a specific idea of a hat you would like to make or lines that you would like to evoke, such as architectural designs, photos of flowers or landscapes, please feel free to bring images or hats from your own collection to this class. You may also bring any feathers, jewelry, buttons or fabric that you would like to use.

Description:
As printing takes a more important role as art-piece the relationship between type and image questions linear logic, and starts to assume a similarity to avant-guard music, and cinema where textures and trompe l’oeil with poetic text create a tactile experience of an artists vision, no longer just a documentation of their work but an addition to it, a new way to experience it. Or even as a process to elicit new work though the design of a publication.
We will explore the relationship between content and layout through experiments with type and image, the grid vs. the limitations of the page, navigation, and structure.
This twelve-hour, three session, week-end workshop. Participants who have laptops and any image-making software are encouraged to bring them with you, but if you do not we will also be working with X-acto knife and glue stick. We will use online printing services to generate a publication of the results.

Description:
This twelve-hour, three session, week-end workshop explores the current dialogue in information design by presenting visualizations of data in visual culture at large. We will be working with both existing data, and self-generated, or subjective data, to generate engaging information design that tells a story in a unique way.
Exploring the physical qualities of the page, space, or publication, we will create a rationalized compositional strategy using letters, numbers, and grids as well as intuitive methods such as randomness, semiotic compositions and handmade images; resulting in a visualizations of our data to reveal and explore it’s distinguishing characteristics.
Participants who have laptops and any image-making software are encouraged to bring them with you, but if you do not pencil and paper will do!
We will explore online printing to generate a publication of the results.

David Tudor’s Rainforest IV: A sound installation workshop with Casey Anderson
Saturday, December 4th, 2010 +
Sunday, December 5th, 2010
1-4pm
Taught by Casey Anderson
Max. class size: 16 students
REGISTRATION AVAILABLE SOON!
Machine invites you to a two part, hands-on workshop investigating David Tudor’s seminal installation/performance piece, Rainforest IV, lead by Casey Anderson.
During Day 1, participants will learn how to build contact microphones, a miniature amplifier, and an audio output transformer (together forming an audio driver) from scratch. Participants will receive hands-on instruction/assistance with building their own driver for the installation, to be accompanied by discussion of the functionality of these devices and their typical use in sound art/contemporary music. Day 1 will culminate with a discussion of Tudor’s work and a brief introduction to the Rainforest series. Participants will be asked to return for Day 2 with a selection of objects and a possible selection of sound sources.
Day 2 will begin with an in-depth discussion, and demonstration, of how Rainforest IV tends to be realized. Participants will observe documentation of other exhibitions of Rainforest IV from a variety of sources and will learn what makes a particular exhibition most successful. Afterwards, the workshop will shift gears to an environment for experimentation with participant’s newly-constructed drivers. As they experiment with resonating various objects, each participant will receive input from the instructor regarding effective strategies for creating/presenting a strong Rainforest object. As Day 2 progresses, participants will collaboratively transform the Machine work space into a group exhibition of Rainforest IV, culminating in a free open house to showcase the installation.
