c-base and the COVID-19 lock-down

This page will be continuously updated. Please check regularly for new information.

Let’s start with the good news! The family name of the current pandemic virus (Coronaviridae) as well as the disease (COVID-19) caused by it both start with the letter ‚C‘. This makes us happy.

What makes us sad is that, in order to slow down the transmission of the virus, we need to shut down most of station services. This means in detail:

  • ALL EVENTS listed in the c-base calendar are CANCELLED until further notice.
  • The BAR of c-base is CLOSED until further notice – as are all bars in Berlin

How do members stay in contact during the lock-down?

Covid-19 – Public Events in Tog

All Tog public events are cancelled until the 5th of April.

Tog is continuing to take measures to protect our members and the general public and by following advice from the HSE. The National Public Health Emergency Team has advised that individuals should reduce discretionary social contacts as much as possible.

In light of this advice, we have decided to cancel all open-door public events in the space until the 5th of April. These are all group nights and open social.

The space will remain open to our members in a limited capacity. Please do not show up unannounced as a visitor.

We are exploring options to move some events online and we will be putting together resources on social media to share some hacking and making skills while the public events are curtailed.

It will be a challenging time for our community and society at large. We are open to hearing ideas (email info@tog.ie ) from you on making the most of the current situation and keeping our community strong.

We send our best wishes to the medical staff who are dealing with this crisis and we encourage everyone to follow HSE advice.

Meet a Maker: Wolfgang Siebeneic

Meet a Maker: Wolfgang Siebeneic

Wolfgang Siebeneich works with wood and metal at the Makerspace.

Among Siebeneich’s many projects at the Makerspace is rehabilitating tools that have been misused.

“Doesn’t take long for tools to get bad in the woodshop,” said Siebeneich. “Tools in this place get … abused a lot …. But I’m gonna clean these up and rehabilitate them and then put them back in the woodshop and see how long they live. And I don’t expect them to last very long.”

One such tool is an adze. Adzes are ancient instruments used for carving wood.

“One of the earliest known uses for them is for hollowing out logs for canoes. You use it much like you would a hatchet,” said Siebeneich. “I’ve been really happy with the way these work.”

“I’m a real fan of old-school human powered tools,” he said. “In my world, utility trumps aesthetics.”

Siebeneich enjoys making useful items despite his finished projects sometimes being underused. Siebeneich said, “One [project] I did about three or four years ago is building a kickwheel for the pottery area … It took me about three weeks to make it and for the next two years nobody ever used it so it seemed kind of a waste. But it was a fun project.”

“I do get a great deal of satisfaction from doing a project successfully,” said Siebeneich. “The reason I’m proud of them is not anything I do with craftsmanship…but I’m proud of them because they work, beautifully.”

Filmed over the course of a full year, the group uses cutting edge science and technology to build practical solutions for those who need their help.

RC Car Battle Results

On February 25th, eight makers participated in the Sumo Battle that we’ve been preparing for since January. It was a raucous evening of smashing plastic and cheering crowds. Afterward we took apart a few cars to see how they worked – near the end of the video Ben even explains how he combined the front ends of two cars into one. Off camera, Eric took the other two halves and made an additional car, and maybe they’ll be another video showcasing that one!

Embroidery Class – Feb 29

Have you ever seen custom embroidery work and wanted to make it happen yourself? Well good news, Omaha Maker Group has the equipment and a class for it!

In this class, we’ll cover how to select and set up a design (from a custom design and/or stored on the machine), how to prepare your material for embroidery, and how to set up the equipment. Students are encouraged to bring an item to customize (tote, shirt, blanket, etc.) but materials will be provided to make a patch that could be added to other clothing or accessories.

Class is on Saturday, February 29th. Since space is limited, we’re holding 3 sessions limited to 3 people in each session. Each session will cover the same topics.
